QUALITY IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN QUANTITY:
Praying five minutes sincerely is better than 15 minutes of distracted prayer. With that said, don’t just pray according to what is convenient for you. Pray with purpose and on purpose.
PLAN TO PRAY
Schedule your day around your prayer time and not vice versa.
BOW YOUR HEAD AND CLOSE YOUR EYES
I often tell the youth I encounter when I lead them in prayer to bow their heads and close their eyes. We bow our heads in recognition that He is holy and He is greater than us. We bow because we don’t deserve an audience with Him. We close our eyes because it helps us focus :-). It may not be a Biblical requirement to close your eyes, but it can definitely help you focus on who you are talking to!
Choose the posture of prayer that helps you focus AND stay awake. Prayer is awesome, but some days it is easier to stay awake than others so you have to set yourself up to be successful. Choosing the right posture for your prayer can be key to actually having a great prayer time. You can pray on your knees, but you do not have to do so… Sometimes when you are tired, it may be better not to pray on your knees. You can stand, sit, walk, kneel, lay prostrate or do all of them.
TURN ON WORSHIP MUSIC BEFORE YOU PRAY TO HELP YOU FOCUS
Worship music is music that will make you think about God. Typically, this music isn’t fast paced. It tends to be slow. It should talk about God and who He is even more than what you want Him to do. Some of the songs can even be prayers. Worship and pray. It’s okay, if the lines blur and you weave in and out of worship and prayer. God wants you more than He wants a structure to your interaction with Him. Give Him your time and worship.
